九州新幹線開業直後に行ったときの写真です。当時は新八代までしか開業していなかったため、博多からグレーのいかついボディをした「リレーつばめ」で新八代に乗り付けて 対面に待つ白と赤の曲線的な「つばめ」に乗り換えていました。 今は新大阪から鹿児島中央まで乗り換え無しで行ける様になった訳ですが、私が行けない場所に住む事になってしまいました。残念。
This photo it was taken immediately after the Shinkansen was opened. Time were taken photographs, and since not been completed, from Hakata to Shin-Yatsushiro is moved in a conventional express train, where it was changing. Currently from Shin-Osaka to Kagoshima-Chuo, you can move directly in the bullet train. However, the current I live in Unfortunately it is not possible to use the bullet train location.

鹿児島中央駅 (西鹿児島駅) は元々山の隙間をぐるりと回りこんできたところにあったので、その在来線に直行する配置の新幹線は ホームのすぐ先にトンネルが見えています。
This station is in the middle of the line which are arranged along the mountain. So Shinkansen intersecting at right angles to the line reaches the station through a tunnel.
新幹線ホームを在来線ホームから見上げたところ。トタン造りの階段とコンクリ造りの外壁が良くマッチしているような？
開業までのカウントダウンが掲示されていたと思われる看板。既に開業済みなので「祝 開業」になっています。
This sign had been posted the number of days remaining until the bullet train is completed. Since the photo after this was already completed, it is on the word to celebrate the completion rather than in days.
桜島をモチーフにしたステンドグラスは新幹線の開業記念に展示されました。左側に見えている四角いプレートには 桜島を詠んだ短歌が記されています。
To celebrate the completion of the Shinkansen, stained glass has been posted. The stained glass depicts the Sakurajima (famous volcano in the region).
JRの駅前には鹿児島市電の路面電車の駅もあります。 気のせいかもしれませんが、九州、四国には路面電車が多いような気がします。
駅前に展示されている「若き薩摩の群像」 これは新幹線開業とは関係なく、もっと前からあったらしいです。 江戸時代末期にイギリスに留学して明治期の日本の原動力になった一団だとか。
"Satsuma youth sculptured group" is on display in front of the station. This is a young man who was studying in the United Kingdom in the Edo era.
2004年当時の駅を出てすぐの辺りの写真。ストリートビューで駅前を見てみたら今(2015年6月)は大分変わってますね。
